How to Turn Your Home Into a Sanctuary for God

Well, good morning, sunshine! Have you ever had those moments where you had a high time in the Lord while on a retreat, yet it felt impossible to recapture that at home? I have too, and guess what? Today’s post is about how our house can be a sanctuary and where the Holy Spirit wants to live!

Praise & Worship

This is a no-brainer, I’m sure, but just as a reminder, praise and worship aren’t just things that happen when we meet at church. This should be our way of life. But, before I delve deeper into that, let me remind you of the meaning of sanctuary. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it simply as “a consecrated place,” a place that has been made or declared holy, sacred. That is the type of place the Lord desires to abide in. The real work begins with us. Remember, the Bible describes us as temples of the Holy Ghost, and He longs to abide in our praises.

Since our bodies are now the temple of the Holy Spirit, praise and worship should flow from us wherever we are.

Intentional Quality Time

Let’s think like wives for a moment. Which do you prefer—your husband spending an afternoon with you but glued to his phone, or one where he’s fully engaged with you, where you’re sharing, dreaming, building together, and not just your one-sided monologue?

That same intentionality we desire with our men is what Abba desires from us. Yes, we may have mastered the art of multitasking, but it’s not always for our best. When it comes to quality time with Him, stillness is key.

Obedience

Do you remember how life was when you worked outside of the home? When it was time for your annual review, the focus wouldn’t be on how well put together you looked, but on your ability to flow and function well according to the climate and expectations of that company. Spiritually, this looked like obedience to whatever the Lord said, with no deviation. We can’t long for His presence but refuse to follow His desires. Willing obedience is the game changer.

How Organization & Cleanliness Fit

I already know you saw this section and had many questions. Answer questions as they come along. Is your house mostly in order? Have you come up with systems to help everyone stay consistent and helpful?

We have to remember Father God’s nature. Creation was formed by Him calling into order the chaos that was darkness. He mentioned in the Book of Daniel that he and his friends had an excellent spirit. 1 Corinthians 14:4 says we must do everything decently and in order. In the Old Testament, the Lord was very clear about how they should separate themselves from what was unclean.

What to do Right Now?

For starters, take a deep breath, sis, because this isn’t a one-and-done moment but a well-planned journey.

  • Document it—Grab your journal and jot down what you believe is stopping you from basking in the presence of the Lord. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit for clarity.

  • Praise break—Now, worship and praise the Lord freely, as His Spirit leads you.

  • Read your Bible and be still.

  • Clean up and organize—get your house in order. This is an outward expression of what the Holy Spirit did within your heart.

Here’s a great starting point for housing the glory of the Lord. Sit with John 14:23

Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.

What’s one step you’ll take today to create a sanctuary for His presence? Share below—I’d love to hear your thoughts
