What God Says About Beauty: Overcome Insecurity and Embrace Your Worth
Sis, have you ever wondered how gorgeous the ladies in the Bible had to be to cause kingdoms to go into chaos because of their beauty? I’ll be honest with you. When I heard how fine Sarah was as an older woman, I was like BABY! Lord, let Ya girl stay fine like wine always! 😅
But here’s the real question: Is it God’s definition of beauty or something more profound?
Let’s compare society’s view of beauty with God’s Word and walk in the truth of what He calls beautiful. It’s time to kick insecurity to the curb and stand confidently in who God says we are.
Beauty Defined
The world places beauty in a box—airbrushed, filtered, and fleeting. Society measures it by outer appearance, body shape, skin tone, hair texture, and the latest trend. The pressure to keep up never lets up.
Now, Sis, if you like fashion, makeup, stylish accessories, and all the girly things like that, that’s perfectly fine. Feel free to be your best self according to your season. Just keep true beauty in mind during the process.
But God? He sees through it all. God focuses on the heart while the world zooms in on the surface.
“The Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)
Inner beauty doesn’t expire. It doesn’t crack with age or fade with time. The Lord defines beauty by what reflects His character, not what fits into a feed-worthy photo.
What Does the Bible Say About Beauty?
The Bible doesn’t ignore outward beauty. Sarah’s radiance turned Pharaoh’s head (Genesis 12:11-15). Rebekah’s beauty caught the eye of a servant sent to find a wife for Isaac (Genesis 24:16). Rachel was lovely in form and appearance (Genesis 29:17). Esther’s outward beauty won favor with the king (Esther 2:7-17).
But their stories didn’t stop there—and neither should ours.
Outward beauty is not vanity. The appearance God gave each of us has a divine purpose. My husband is a photographer, and I’m his favorite subject. Duh, he’s supposed to feel that way about me; at the same time, I know that I’m an attractive woman. However, it wasn’t ever to “serve looks” but to use them to draw others to Jesus.
Beauty and character. Ruth’s loyalty and faithfulness made her stand out (Ruth 1:16-17; 3:11). Abigail’s wisdom and quick thinking saved her household and caught David’s attention (1 Samuel 25:3, 18-35). And the Proverbs 31 woman? Her worth is far above rubies—not because of how she looks, but because of how she lives.
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” – Proverbs 31:30 (KJV)
These women showed grace, humility, boldness, and trust in God. That’s the kind of beauty that builds nations and leaves a legacy.
Embracing Our Beauty
You are enough—period. Insecurity doesn’t get the final word. God already gave it when He created you in His image and called you “very good.”
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” – Genesis 1:27 (KJV)
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” – Genesis 1:31 (KJV)
Quit the comparison trap. No one else can carry your calling. If you refuse to obey God, He will raise someone who will, but that’s for another day.
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…” – Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)
The world doesn’t need a copy—it requires you to be fully present, fully alive, and confident in God’s design. Own your story, walk in your grace, and let the glow come from within.
Showing Up for Ourselves, Outwardly and Inwardly
Beauty is both soul and skin. We honor God when we care for the bodies He gave us. Move your body, nourish it well, and rest when needed. That’s not vanity—it’s stewardship. Don’t forget Esther’s beauty treatment, which we read about in chapter two.
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you… therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” – 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (KJV)
Sis, don’t think for one moment that this isn’t for me. I have wrestled with rest long enough, and I got tired of disobeying God and dishonoring my body by making rest optional. My lack of rest impacted my health, appearance, relationships, and even my spirit man, and I had had enough.
Take care of your mind and emotions, too. Guard your peace. Speak truth to yourself. Get in God’s Word. Journal, pray, cry, laugh, breathe. You’re not just surviving—you’re thriving when you tend to every part of who you are.
I declare daily affirmations and try making my daily movements count as exercise to stay moving and keep my mind clear. Christian counseling is also a necessary tool for me because it helps me use the tools God gave us in His Word to overcome and heal so that I’m emotionally and mentally kind to myself and those around me.
“Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” – 3 John 1:2 (KJV)
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” – Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
Now that we’ve clarified beauty, it’s time to express it boldly. Let the world see God’s glory through us—His daughters, masterpieces, and reflections on Earth.
