Journaling with Jesus: 5 Powerful Prompts to Deepen Your Faith

Sis, let’s be real—life is loud. From dishes clanking in the kitchen to kids needing your attention right now, finding time to breathe, let alone reflect, can feel impossible. But carving out space to sit with Jesus and journal? That’s not extra. That’s essential.

I didn’t always prioritize this, and now that I know better, I’m here to help you do better with me.

Journaling is more than scribbling feelings in a notebook. It also isn’t reserved for professional writers either (I used to think this in my ignorance).

Collecting and surrendering our thoughts to the truth of God’s Word—this is journaling. It’s where anxiety bows, clarity rises, and the Holy Spirit speaks. Whether you’re brand-new to journaling or trying to reignite the habit, these five prompts will help you reflect, refocus, and deepen your faith—one honest page at a time.

1. “Lord, where am I struggling to trust You right now?”

Be honest. Name the place where your faith feels shaky. Write out what’s been weighing heavily on your soul. God isn’t afraid of your doubts—He invites them.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)

When we pour out what we’re wrestling with, we make room for His peace to move in. I will make room for You to do whatever You want to.

2. “What have You already done for me that I need to remember today?”

Gratitude shifts the atmosphere. Reflecting on God’s past faithfulness strengthens our hope for the future. Journal through moments where He showed up—big or small.

Recently, when preparing for a counseling session, I remembered God’s goodness—whew! My whole perspective shifted in an instant!

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” – Psalm 103:2 (KJV)

Write out your wins, breakthroughs, and answered prayers. They’re reminders that the Lord is still moving.

3. “What is the Scripture for my heart this week?”

Let the Word lead. Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight a verse that speaks to your current season. Write it down. Pray through it. Let it guide your thoughts and shape your mindset.

One of the verses for my current season is Acts 20:24, because He’s calling me to be immovable and undaunted by the good or the bad concerning earthly matters.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” – Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

Bonus: Write the verse in different translations or break it down line by line.

4. “Jesus, will You help me to see myself from Your perspective today?”

Whew. This one might make you pause. It definitely did for me. So many of us see ourselves through tired, critical, or filtered eyes. But God sees you—fully, lovingly, truthfully.

“Fearfully and wonderfully made…” – Psalm 139:14 (KJV)
“She is clothed with strength and dignity…” – Proverbs 31:25 (KJV)

Ask Him to show you what He loves about you today. Then receive it. Write it down like a love letter straight from the Father’s heart.

5. “Lord, what are You calling me to today?”

Faith isn’t just about reflection—it’s also about direction. End your journaling time by asking God, “What do You want me to do with what I’ve written?” Be still and write down His instructions—whether it’s forgiving someone, taking a leap, or simply resting in Him.

“Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only…” – James 1:22 (KJV)

Let your journal become a launchpad—not just a place of release, but a place of response.

Sis, journaling with Jesus doesn’t have to be polished or perfect. Just honest. Real. Open. God meets us in the pages. He hears our heart, even when the words come out messy. So grab a notebook and make space to write with Him today.

In Him,

Candace
