Easy Family Devotion Ideas That Actually Work

Hello, love! Imagine having multiple children, running a business, homeschooling said children, serving a husband who works outside the home, and maintaining consistent family devotions. Is this familiar to you? You may have mastery over this area, but I didn’t. Thankfully, I found three impactful ways to make it all make sense, while letting go of one thing.

Making Bible Study Great Again

Okay, I digress. We know why I put that there. 🤭 Seriously, it’s high time we kick dull Bible studies in the teeth for good. But, what is a dull bible study? Well, for one, it’s not bible study if we’re not focusing on the Bible, so although I’m an author, my books shouldn’t be your bible study’s focus (in my opinion). However, you can use a Holy Spirit-inspired book as a supplemental text for your Bible study.

Before we can engage them, we must first make sense of our schedule. Be kind to yourself and remove those things you added to your to-do list so you can be busy.

  1. Song + Scripture. One way to make the study fit for all is to base it on a song. For example, you could choose the song “Shine, Jesus, Shine” and then a focus verse related to the song (Matthew 5:16) and read them in context.

  2. Ask the Husband. Sometimes, when unsure what direction to take my devotions, I will quickly ask my husband what the Lord was ministering to him, and I’ll build from there.

  3. Ask the children. Their input matters, and they also hear from God. One way to keep them engaged is to know that their voice and input are necessary.

That One Thing

I had to learn that the absolute best way to prepare for family bible studies, especially with the hopes they’ll work, is to pray and keep faith alive. Every day will not look the same. Whatever expectations we have of our spouses and their engagement, we should surrender that to the Lord.

Not all our ideas, whims, or desires come from the Lord; sometimes they’re very selfish, but we disguise them as something holy. So, I let go of the notion that everything has to be exactly how I imagined for everyone to flow well and in sync with one another. By doing that, the pressure is off, and I am breathing better and have a lot less angst surrounding devotional time.

Just talk to your man, sis.

Remember, sis, God’s not looking for perfection—He’s after your heart. Family devotions don’t have to be complicated or Pinterest-worthy to be powerful. Just start. Stay in tune with the Holy Spirit, ask for help when needed, and keep Jesus at the center. You’ve got this, and He’s got you.
