Sis, It’s Time to Detox Your Home—A Natural, Faith-Based Homemaking Guide

Hey, girl, hey! Here’s something we all know—our family is our greatest earthly treasure. Our homes are safe havens for us to dream and thrive. Unfortunately, sometimes, the very items we’re using to try to be good homemakers can actually make us sick.

There’s no need to stress about it. Instead, we’re getting the job done with Holy Spirit insight—detoxing our homes and bodies, and being homemakers after God’s heart. Let’s begin with these three easy steps.

1. Read the Labels

  • Breathe, love; you can do even what feels hard. Pick your easiest category to start with—mine was cleaning supplies.

  • Check the ingredients, look them up, or stick to products with labels a 10-year-old could understand. In case you’re wondering why this matters, it’s because many things lurking in our products harm our health and debilitate us over time.

I'd rather stand on "with long life will I satisfy you" while also working the Word—because faith without works is dead.

The other day, I was like, “Bump it, let me clean this powder room with natural ingredients.” And that, sis, is how it starts.

2. Start Simple

  • Choose one cleaning product to change. An easy swap I made was replacing chlorine bleach with hydrogen peroxide or baking soda (use the aluminum-free kind).

  • Then, choose one food product or additive to avoid. I began by cutting out anything containing high fructose corn syrup. You might choose to start by eliminating sodas—whatever feels doable for you.

3. Stay Consistent

  • Create a habit of change. But first, talk to your husband to see if you're on the same page.

Please do your research before the conversation, sis, so you can present the facts lovingly and clearly. I highly recommend starting with Dr. Axe’s website—he and his wife, Dr. Chelsea, are believers and truly practice what they preach when it comes to clean living.

If you're both on board, awesome! Decide what you'll change first and hold each other accountable.

If he's not opposed but not fully engaged, you still have the green light to do your thing. Find a trusted girlfriend to check in with for accountability. I firmly believe he’ll begin noticing the difference, and when he makes the connection, he’ll join wholeheartedly.

If he’s not on board, don’t attack—have those gentle, heart-to-heart pillow talk conversations. Try watching documentaries together about the food industry or toxins in everyday products to help build understanding and support your stance. And sis, don’t forget to pray for unity.

The Holy Spirit can do what we can't.

  • Punch temptation in the gut. You’ll face chances to fall off before consistency sets in, especially in the beginning. Eliminate those temptations as best you can.

Sis, you don’t have time to entertain the foolishness. Check in with your accountability person when it gets hard. Be honest.

Listen, I do this too. And when I miss it (because it still happens at the time of this post—but it’s getting better), I get back up and do better. That’s what the righteous do.

This, my dear, is how we start this clean-living, detox-our-home journey: baby steps. If you can do more than what’s suggested, go for it!

Incorporate the change with prayer, worship, fasting, and Bible reading. In earth as it is in heaven, remember?

Share your feelings about making these changes in the comments, as well as any ideas or experiences you have! Let’s inspire each other and keep on going.

Candace
